The subject

This painting is based off an antique floral print belonging to my late art teacher, Nancy Sims. The edges were ragged, the color nearly gone… but there was still beauty in that old floral print. I wanted to bring the print back to life again on new paper with fresh color and energy.

The process

Instead of using a full range of color, Mrs. Sims encouraged me to mix my colors from scratch, using only the primary colors, black and white. The restricted color selection gave me experience creating my own shades and hues.

I painted this bouquet one flower at a time over a period of five sessions. Breaking up the process gave me fresh eyes every time I started painting.

I love everything about acrylic paint—except how fast it dries! To solve this problem, I used Liquitex Slow-Dri Blending Medium. This blending medium gave me freedom to work at my own pace while not hampering the integrity of the colors.
